No need to speculate on Mach/BSD/OS10 UNIX vs LINUX a good review / history can be found on this LINUX site - linuxworld.com

Bottom line, BSD can run LINUX SW with little trouble.

As far as #1 is concerned...AAPL started as a hobbyist tool.
#2...Red Hat and Caldera are producing very good 3rd party apps.
#3...Mac OS is slowly becoming more similar to UNIX (and hence LINUX) than the other way around.

LINUX will become more consumer oriented. If I'm not mistaken, it is still the fastest growing OS.
