Goto.com is not public. It's part of the slew of internet companies coming out of idealab (http://idealab.com ). if you pay to have your web site advertised, can you turn around and charge other people to advertise on your site??? Of course, that's how things are done. The truth is that it's not easy to get paying advertisers. The best bet is the pay-for-performance model. What that means is that I put up pointers to books at amazon.com and if you click on my link to amazon and end up buying the book at amazon, I get 15% of the purchase price (some books are only 5%). eToys pays 25%. I get $5 for new subscribers to Wall Street Journal. Most e-commerce places have these affiliate programs. It's great for them, because they delay the marketing cost until after the purchase, and it's still much cheaper than buying banner ads on yahoo. Other things: Yahoo started as an edited list of categorized sites. The core part of it still is, however it also has a real search engine back end. The search engine backend is from inktomi. (Search for something on yahoo and when the results page comes up there will be a list that reads: Categories: Web Sites, Web Pages, News Stories, Net Events Click on "web pages" and you will get the search engine results, "web sites" gives the traditional yahoo categorized results.) Also, yahoo visited my site within a few days of when I submitted it. (I can see that in the logs.) However, it still isn't listed in the yahoo directory. So, either they deemed it not worthy of being listed, or that takes longer than three weeks. This also may depend on what category your site falls into. I've heard that they will list international sites and corporate sites very quickly. Jim
