Some 400,000 Taiwanese Companies Not Ready For Y2K TAIPEI (Reuters) - Some 400,000 small and medium sized companies in Taiwan are not yet prepared for the impact of the millennium bug, the economics ministry said Sunday. A survey by the ministry's Y2K office showed that of the one million small and medium sized firms, 40 percent have taken no action to reprogram their computer data systems, which might trigger a crash by 2000. The millennium or Y2K bug, threatens a huge global base of older computers that read only the last two digits of a year and cannot distinguish 2000 from 1900. Experts warn that computers could malfunction and disrupt numerous sectors, including the world's financial systems and computer-run transport networks. The office, set up to help local institutions fight the millennium bug, said year 2000 is less than 360 days away, but a number of manufacturing companies were unaware of its repercussions. It was necessary for these companies to amend their systems preferably before July, or they would face transaction or operation problems, ministry officials said. The survey by the office showed almost all large companies, utilities, government bodies, airlines, shipping firms, telecommunications and financial institutions have completed or nearly completed reprogramming their data systems. The office said it would step up efforts to ask companies that have yet to take action to swiftly reprogram their systems and offer help to those in need. The government has provided incentives, including tax rebates and low-interest loans, for companies to complete reprogramming their data systems before 2000.
