Open Market Scores Another Win in the New Media/Publishing Industry With Encyclopaedia Britannica Online

BURLINGTON, Mass., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Open Market, Inc. (Nasdaq: OMKT), a leading provider of Internet commerce and information publishing software, today announced that it has added another award-winning online information provider to its customer roster with Encyclopaedia Britannica Online(R) provided by Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. Introduced in 1994, it was the first encyclopedia on the Web. Encyclopaedia Britannica Online has now licensed Open Market's Internet commerce software, Transact(TM), and its industrial-strength catalog software, LiveCommerce(TM).

"We initially selected Transact and LiveCommerce to improve the shopping and buying experience for customers who visit our online store," said Patricia Ginnis, director of e-Commerce for Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. "But as we look to the future, we're also pleased to know that the Open Market solution supports subscriptions, the sale of physical goods and digital products, and micro-transactions -- forms of commerce we either use today or will consider down the road."

"As one of the world's great publishers, founded in 1768, Encyclopaedia Britannica has excelled at self-reinvention. In recent years, with its move to the Internet, Britannica has again used creative business models and processes to retain its position as one of the most popular sources of high- quality information -- on the Internet, on CD-ROM or in print," said Gary Eichhorn, president and CEO of Open Market, Inc. "Investing in Open Market's flexible solution, that adapts as business requirements dictate, was an obvious choice for Britannica."

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online is a fully searchable and browsable encyclopedic reference service that contains the full text of the 32-volume Encyclopaedia Britannica(R) as well as thousands of additional articles, special multimedia features, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate(R) Dictionary (Tenth Edition), the Britannica Book of the Year(R), and thousands of links to other World Wide Web sites selected by Britannica editors.

The Britannica Bookstore features more than two dozen products available on the Internet, in print, and on CD-ROM. They include Encyclopaedia Britannica Online, Britannica(R) CD 99 Multimedia Edition, Encyclopaedia Britannica Profiles Black History, the Ultimate Reference Suite(TM), Yearbook of Science and the Future, and products from Britannica's subsidiary, Merriam- Webster, Incorporated including Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Collegiate Thesaurus.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online joins numerous leading new media/publishing companies as Open Market customers. Some of these include Addison Wesley Longman, BusinessWeek, Consumers Union, Harcourt Brace, Playboy Online, Standard & Poors, TimeWarner Pathfinder, Tribune Company, and USA Today.

Be careful, Cybercash's revenue growth is significant and will only accelerate over the next 2 years.

Open Market does not seem to be growing as quickly as it should.
