(This is a Crazy trend!)Big news: Ford speeds V8 output in Windsor

WINDSOR, Ont., Jan 04, 1999 (The Canadian Press via COMTEX) -- It seems
we just can't get enough of those big V8 engines: Ford is boosting
production of the 5.4-litre Triton power plant at its Windsor engine
factory by 50,000 units a year.

Ford said Monday that the move is ''in response to unprecedented
customer demand for the company's V8-powered trucks and sport utility
vehicles.''

The Windsor plant, which also produces Ford's 4.6-litre V8 and
6.8-litre V10, ended the year with output of 769,800 engines. Combined
with the nearby Essex plant, Windsor operations produced 1,363,000
engines in 1998, up by almost 200,000 from 1997, Ford said.

For the new year, the 5.4-litre V8 -- which powers the F-Series pickup,
Econoline van and Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs -- has had its
horsepower raised by more than 10 per cent to 260. Its fuel consumption
is rated at 17.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 12.3 on the
highway, in an F-150 with automatic transmission.

The Windsor engine plant, with a workforce of 2,380, was built in 1922,
was closed in 1990 and reopened, completely rebuilt, two years later.
