A.G. Edwards Strategist: 1999's Fastest Growth To Be In 1Q

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. markets will see the fastest growth during the first quarter of 1999, according to Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist at A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc.

"We will start to see good news in the economy in the first quarter, spurred on by the Fed rate cuts we saw late last year and the low unemployment rate," Freeman said in an interview with CNBC Monday.

In addition, Freeman predicted fourth-quarter corporate earnings, which will be released during the quarter, will be favorable and that the gross domestic product will be better than expected.

However, the strategist noted that slower industrial production growth, in addition to increases in consumer debt and weaker consumer spending will curb growth later in the year.

"Last year was very, very narrow; it was very difficult to beat the market. I think this year will be even harder," Freeman added.

The strategist said the best investments for 1999 are large defensive growth stocks including those of drug companies and telecommunications equipment makers.

Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) were among Freeman's picks for the year.
