ed, you raise good points. i guess what i am saying is that every mail order company that exists will soon be a net company if they aren't already (HUGE supply of potential sellers). in addition, the etailers have to do massive amounts of advertising that might rival catalogue expenditures more closely than you think. catalogues do something a web page doesn't - reminds shoppers you are there. e-mailing customers does this, too, though it might get annoying to many people as the amzn's of the world probably won't show restraint...

oh, and many mail order companies are the p-word (profitable) ;-)

i do online shopping, too. bought my computer and several software packages via the net - at SUBSTANTIAL discounts. however, mega sites with MASSIVE databases and lots of graphics, java, etc... are very difficult to navigate through unless you are totally bored. i mean, amzn is going to be the mega shopping site, ala wal-mart, of the net, right? ;-)
