From Der Spiegel's "A Visit from Mr. Ko"

Before being expelled from China, SPIEGEL correspondent Jürgen Kremb met up again with a farming family, after 13 years - and heard a story of disappointed hopes. The rural population is suffering the hardest under the economic crisis. The officially propagated story of the increasing affluence of Chinese farmers has long become a legend in Huangshui and many other places in the provinces. Over the last few years, a distinct social gradient has emerged in the villages. Wealth for a few has produced social dilapidation, ignorance and filth for the majority.
