SYDNEY, Jan 4 (AFP) - Scientists believe they have made a breakthrough in plant research that could help feed millions and save children in poor countries unable to afford vaccines, a joint Australian/Belgium research team announced Monday.

Researcher Peer Schenk from Australia's Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Plant Pathology (CRCTPP) in Brisbane, told AFP on Monday the development could also transform the agricultural industry.

The genetic breakthrough should produce crops that are more nourishing, disease resistant, tolerant of cold and drought. The crops also grow quicker, produce higher yields and need less pesticide.

They could also be used to help produce a cheap alternative to vaccinating children at risk from life-threatening diseases in developing countries.....
