"<<Maybe someone wanted to change their gold format, into coins>>
The mint states that all gold eagles sales are very near equal to gold purchases during the year - and that all gold was bought from U.S. mining companies."

Big deal... Maybe the excess demand comes from Institutional buyer exchanging Gold into coins, through the mint, as sales on the Spot markets, and purchases from the Mint. To get into a form that by-passes the tax implications of the Euro; as the form of taxation on Gold as an investment.
