Jon- Great point i.e. small size of Europe explaining mail delivery and tower coverage. Maybe this explains how Mussolini got the trains to run "on time" as well. Tom

The Western European countries are smaller, but not THAT small! New Jersey is only about 8,000 square miles in area*, Germany is about 138,000 square miles, just a little smaller than California (159,000). France is 213,000 sq. mi. (or 553,000 sq. km if you prefer!), almost as big as Texas (267,000). I think if you compared the whole of Europe outside Russia to the continental U.S. they would be pretty comparable in size.

*Another fun fact about New Jersey (where I lived for six years in grad school) is that its population density is almost twice that of India!
