"This is clear evidence that women are more developed in the shopping environment than men are, despite the fact the larger Internet use universe is split about 50/50," senior vice president Bob Ivins told CBS.MarketWatch.com. Women were particularly more active on sites selling apparel, he added. Approximately one million unique visitors went to five or more shopping sites during this period, and one out of five online shoppers visited at least three shopping sites, he said. "The Books/music/movies category experienced the smallest percentage increase in traffic during the holiday shopping season," said Ted Hawthorne, Media Metrix' vice president of research and client information. "However, that category posted the largest actual gain in audience." He said this indicates the area has not yet peaked in popularity or use. AOL fails to halt WorldNet promotion A Federal District Court Chief judge has rejected America Online's effort to block AT&T WorldNet Service from using the phrase "You Have Mail." The court also refused to prohibit WorldNet from using "Buddy List" and "IM" in promoting its "I M Here" instant messaging service. At a December 24th hearing, Chief Judge Claude Hilton of the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia rejected AOL's claim, stating that AT&T made a compelling case that the terms in dispute were likely generic, WorldNet said. The ruling came in a hearing on AOL's request for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction.
