I'm not sure that they left Jerusalem because they were preaching in an attempt to gain converts to Jesus from the Jews. Their task was to carry this message to Jews first before the Gentiles. I suspect they were expecting Jesus to return in there near future to bring the Kingdom plans to fruition and they would rule and reign over the 12 tribes of Israel. Paul was traveling but it seems he always started in the Synagogues where ever he was at, at least initially. Anyway, you know the rest of the story about the enemies he created among most of the Jewish proests and community.
As you know, Peter was preaching atonement for the crucifixion of Jesus by the Jews saying, "repent and be baptised." Other than Paul and his closest converts, its seems that 1500 years of Mosiac law is hard to get out of one's system.

God bless,
Jim
