I'm guessing, but... The combined market cap of all S&P 500 index funds is a known number, and the number of AOL shares transferring from the midcap index funds is a known number. AOL's weighting in the S&P 500 is a known percentage. The specialist has a good record of most institutional purchases since S&P announced AOL's inclusion.
