GUI!? We don'need no stinkin gooeys.

Went on vacation for a couple of weeks over the holidays. I was worried because I'd never been away from my square-headed girlfriends that long before. But I had nothing to fear.

I used xringd, which allows me to dial my modem number from any phone and <delete secret code> and the gateway machine will dial into the Internet. The gateway knows to post my IP to an ftp site whenever it dials in. Then, from any net connected machine, I can reach my whole home-network.... read mail, news, etc. I even upgraded two machines completely from 2000 miles away on a Win95 machine running telnet.

Try that with anything from Redmond.

BTW - I installed BeOS last night. Pretty impressive, but incompatible with my network card :(
Take their Hardware compatibility list seriously if you ever plan to try it.
