Sounds like great news to me. The dense, urban business districts of Japan are the ideal setting to showcase the low-cost, quick implementation advantages of fixed wireless over cable.

KDD/WinStar/Sumitomo Joint Venture Capitalized At Y1 Billion

Japan's KDD Corp. (J.KDD or 9431) and
Sumitomo Corp. (J.SUT or 8053), and WinStar
Communications Inc. of the U.S. have
established a joint venture to provide wireless
telecommunications services and applied for a
telecommunications license Tuesday, KDD said
in a statement.

The joint venture has been named KDD WinStar
Corp. and it aims to begin providing wireless
access communications services to users in
May. It is capitalized at Y1 billion, with KDD
providing 55%, WinStar 35% and Sumitomo
10%.

KDD said the joint venture is targeting about Y1
billion in sales in its third year of operations. The
company will have 50 employees when it starts
operations in May.

KDD WinStar will provide point-to-point and
point-to-multipoint communications systems to
internet providers and other companies that
transmit large amounts of data.
