Mind-boggling, the amount of corruption in the PRC.

Zhu just had to call for another effort yesterday. I forget where. Something about smuggling chemicals or synthetics. Discouraging.

And, yes, 111.46 Y/D at this post. That weakness puts my time-table for a yuan devaluation in more jeopardy.

Germany, the EU, and negative effects on U.S. markets? More to come, I think.

Be interesting also to hear what the Franco-phobes, or Francophiles for that matter, have to say. A side note: Someone told me yesterday there has of late been a notable emigration of citizens from France.

I recall also a story about the BIS in Geneva -- the central bank of central banks -- and how they have an axe to grind with the U.S. government over its handling / mishandling of the world's reserve currency. Suffices to say it's not what they'd intended at Bretton Woods. They've been sharpening that axe for a long while, so the story goes. And they're an awfully powerful bunch, that BIS.

Step right up! Get your Sing dollars while they last.

Need one nice pull-back in the Straits Times, then I'm going in. Not certain what I'll buy. Some nice tech companies in Singapore, but I don't invest in tech stocks. Silicon Investor...and I don't invest in tech stocks. :(

Well, you know, I just sort of fell-in here one day from a search engine, and ....

WONG,

I have been enjoying the devaluation of the $HK as it improves the situation for my HK/China exporters.

I still see economists saying that the $HK and yuan may devalue. I've been saying it won't happen since the crisis started and see even less reason today.

The government and military leadership funneling monies into their own pockets has been in practice for ? years. Bribery, payoffs, skimming, etc have been a part of the society and why should we be surprised that it continues today. It appears that Zhu realizes this must stop, but changing an almost traditional way of doing business cannot be accomplished quickly. I often think the only difference between US and Chinese politicians is discretion. Somehow it's possible for US politicians to become multi-millionaires on relatively small wages.

1999 is going to be a very interesting year.

FWIW,
Ron
