Y2K Compliance: In 1999, the Need Is Speed

Turnaround Time Is 15-20 Times Faster With a Highly Automated Factory Audit

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Correcting date bugs in the millions of lines of code in computer systems is a time consuming and repetitive process. Y2K specialists have spent months searching, locating and fixing date-based errors, but the question still remains ... how complete is their work? How can it be verified for accuracy before the new millennium arrives?

Companies are beginning to understand the importance of auditing their Y2K work, first to ensure business operability, and second, to provide verifiable due diligence in the face of potential litigation. Yet, with only 357 days left until the turn of the millennium, the accuracy and speed of the audit process have become critical factors to consider.

"It's not humanly possible to locate every potential date error," said Jim Henry, vice president of operations at MatriDigm Corporation, a leading provider of highly automated Factory Y2K solutions for IBM COBOL. "What we are finding is that up to 16 percent of all presumed renovated programs still have date errors that were missed. This reveals that errors are common. For businesses depending on mission critical code, not finding the errors could be costly. We have not completed a project for any customer in which we did not find instances that required additional modifications in order for the code to be Y2K compliant."

The Highly Automated Factory Approach

There are three approaches to auditing Y2K remediated code: a tool-assisted solution used in-house, a tool-based factory, and a highly automated factory. Both tool-based methodologies, whether used in house or at an off-site factory facility, still rely heavily on human intervention to analyze the code. This presents several major dilemmas. The intensity of reviewing code manually is mentally taxing which gives rise to human errors and inconsistencies. Another limitation of tool assisted approaches is the amount of code engineers can review. In some better scenarios, the volume of code analyzed by one person has only been around 150,000 to 200,000 lines of code per month.

"What takes Y2K engineers months to analyze will take a highly automated factory, such as MatriDigm's, only days to do," said Henry. "Conservatively speaking, the turnaround time for testing programs in a highly automated factory is 15-20 times faster than the manual, tool assisted methodology."

The highly automated factory method incorporates an intelligent, computer-driven process that has minimal human intervention. This ensures a high degree of accuracy, consistency and quick turnaround.

MatriDigm's IV&V Solution

MatriDigm has developed a superior Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) solution that is based on the highly automated factory methodology. MatriDigm's solution identifies simple and complex date errors by utilizing intelligent software that applies over 1,300 rules to a customer's code. The rules exhaustively check for syntax, logic errors and interactions with other fields and other programs. This comprehensive process is automated for quick, yet thorough analysis.

"Why use MatriDigm's highly automated factory method? It provides an independent audit that is thorough, accurate and fast," said Henry. "The results are gathered in a systematic and consistent manner and the comprehensive reports provide an extensive audit trail. With potential business risk and legal liability looming on the horizon, and with so few days remaining before the new millennium arrives, companies must seek an audit solution that provides extremely accurate results in a very short time-frame."

Trial Offer

To understand the magnitude of date errors in its code, qualified organizations are offered the opportunity to run a sample block of their remediated code through MatriDigm's testing and analysis factory. The results are delivered in two parts: an executive summary report which assesses the Y2K compliance of the code, and an interactive CD with a date-by-date examination of the code. With the results, an organization can determine if it wants to continue with due-diligence testing of its code. This proof of concept is available to qualified firms.
