A company can announce anything it wants during a "quiet period" as long as it given out in a press release. Companies sometimes issue sales or profit warnings. In this case I think Amazon was trying to stem the tide of over-expectations that has lifted the stock to unreasonable levels.

I think the release was timed to give support to post-split trading. If it turns and runs down, there is no telling where it will stop and AMZN management spends as much time managing their stock price as they do running the biz. They need to keep the stock high to do a secondary, 'cause they are going to need a bunch of hard cash to survive.
