-OT- Buying hardware cheap

Decent article on buying hardware:

firingsquad.com

I think the author is a bit too liberal with the tax issues.

He also does not discuss the pitfalls such as RMA's and warranties. For example, I bought some Diamond Supramax modems from Ma Labs which although they worked, would not work at 56Kbps on certain phone lines even though other modems did. Ma Labs offered to replacement the modems with the same model, but would not replace them with a different model which would work. Had I purchased these retail, I would not have had a problem returning them. I still like Ma Labs, especially since you can't beat them for the price. With regard to warranties, keep in mind that most retail parts have 1-3 year warranties, whereas OEM parts often have max 30 days. (Depends on the vendor.)

In Texas, companies with a retail license are required to report (and pay for) any sales tax monthly. And yes, the government does enforce this!

Cheers,
Tim
