MacNN Synopsis: Live notes from the Keynote (in the Moscone) [ZDTV live Real Audio file] Steve Jobs began his keynote with a "Hal 9000" video clip touting the Y2K readiness of the Mac. Jobs confirmed that Apple will be announcing its fifth consecutive profitable quarter, promising four surprises. New processors up to 400-MHz from both Motorola and IBM in the new Power Mac G3 "Pro" line. A series of "bake-offs" against the "fastest Pentium-II money can buy," a 450-MHz PII, the 400-MHz new Power Mac G3 out performed the Compaq in a series of Photoshop tests. Rick Belluzzo, chairman and CEO of SGI, introduced Apple's OpenGL licensing agreement, saying that OpenGL would be integrated into the Mac OS, becoming its "primary 3D technology," according to Jobs. New Power Mac G3 holds up to 1-Gbyte of memory, up to 100-Gbyte of disks (using IBM's 36-Gbyte drives) using 3 drives, and 4 PCI slots--three of which are 64 bit. Jobs showed the new Power Mac G3, which is very similar to the AppleInsider's rendition posted yesterday. The poly-carbonate casing, however, was Bondi blue, and not the much rumored "ice blue." The new Power Mac G3 also featured a very easy-to-use side-opening door. Jobs said that the AppleStore would offer built-in Gigabye EtherNet as a BTO option. Jobs also introduced the new Bondi blue/white displays, a $1099 flat panel display, $499 17" CRT ColorSync display, and a $1499 21" display. The ColorSync displays feature circutry to continually monitor internal color configuration. New Power Mac G3 are available starting today in four configurations starting at $1599, $1999, $2499, and $2999. Dirk
