Ian --

You're absolutely right regarding the importance of the Department of Defense contract. If the government's acceptance were a field trial, it would be considered the Granddaddy of them all.

You'll be glad to know Dow Jones wasn't among those downplaying it.

Newbridge Networks Gets U.S. Defense Network Solution Pact

HERNDON, Va. -- Newbridge Networks Corp. (NN) said it has received a contract to provide a high-performance networking solution to support the mission-critical communications requirements of the U.S. Defense Department's agencies stationed in South Korea.

In a press release, the company said these agencies protect the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea. It said the high-capacity asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network backbone provided by Newbridge will help the Defense Department realize its goal of bringing centralized network and service management capabilities across one virtual wide area network.

The value of the contract wasn't disclosed.

The company said the network will span 24 locations throughout South Korea, supporting next-generation services and applications.

Newbridge Networks develops and makes computer-network multimedia products and systems.
