Actually HD has done about the same as MSFT since the first of 1998, and since the bottom of the correction this Fall (when I bought it) it has done better than MSFT in relative strength. Building on winners and selling losers is also good strategy, but sometimes hard to actually follow through on. The biggest mistake most neophyte investors make is selling winners and keeping losers to "break even".
There's a lot to be said for concentration of assets. Nobody gets more than a few brilliant ideas, and so it makes sense to put the bulk of your money in your best ideas. In some fields (like drugs) success or failure of products is so variable and unpredictable that it makes sense to buy a basket of stocks. I own about 20 stocks, but some of these are baskets. Over half the dollar value of the portfolio is in 4 stocks -HD,INTC,CSCO,and EMC.
I will check out Tech2000.
