(UPDATE) Lucent Lands $300.7 Million Supply Pact From Brazilian Carrier

Dow Jones Online News, Tuesday, January 05, 1999 at 14:53

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- As the battle to equip newly-privatized
Brazilian telecommunications companies heats up, Lucent Technologies
Inc. announced Tuesday that it won a 363 million real ($300.7 million)
supply pact with Telesp Celular.
The contract calls for the expansion and substitution of both analog
and digital networks in Brazil's most populous metropolitan area of Sao
Paulo.
By the end of June, Lucent said it will install about 400 new cell
sites in Sao Paulo state, with 70% of those expected before the end of
April.
Lucent will use code division multiple access, or CDMA, technology in
the implementation of the digital networks.
The deal announced Tuesday is the second contract awarded by Telesp
Celular to Lucent in the past 60 days.
The earlier contract, worth 65 million reals, was for the expansion
and digitalization of the cellular network in the industrial Sao Paulo
suburb of Osasco. Lucent installed 29 new cell sites as part of the
project.
In December, Lucent inaugurated a $60 million plant in Brazil. The
factory, Lucent's first manufacturing facility outside the U.S., has an
initial capacity to produce 1,650 cell sites per year.
The company said last month that it plans to invest another $10
million in 1999 to meet local market demand, with medium range plans
also calling for the construction of a new $30 million fiber optics
plant.
Lucent Technologies, whose global revenue totaled about $30 billion
last year, has 62 factories in 23 countries, employing some 137,000
workers.
Telesp Celular was acquired by Portugal Telecom SA in July as part of
the privatization of federal holding Telecomunicacoes Brasileiras SA,
known as Telebras.
The Sao Paulo-based company operates 1.7 million cellular lines
throughout the state, making it the largest cellular network in Latin
America, Lucent said in the statement.

Bob Pisoni of CNBC commenting on odd trading...I don't buy it...he seemed to suggest this volume had something to do with the Lucent contract with TCP. He said heavy volume on all the babies...not true...whatever this was hit only four babies and TCP WAS NOT one of them. Volume was slim on all babies all day...this handful of wierd trades in the last 30 minutes took the volume from next to nothing to...

TSP...8,225,100
TSD...5,028,200
TSU...2,056,000
TND...1,017,700

after this rash of blocks was done, volume hardly budged the rest of the day. And again, my broker suggested these were cash trades. AM I ON DRUGS? What in the heck happened? Can't find any reasonable explanation, or even anyone talking about it.
