Once, I could be quite passionate about these issues. Oh do not give up the passion.... never, never, never give it up. Yes, use reason to drive passion and smarts to guide knowledge. If you want something, whatever it is, pursue it as if your life depended upon it.... because, even if you do not think so, it does! I mean life, not mere existence.
