I have heard the flat panel have the same resolution as the trinitron
There is more to flat panels than resolution. There is also the number of colors grades that you can notice. I have seen some flat panels with high pixel count, but if you display a photograph it looks much less detailed because the differences in color are not as sharp as a monitor. If you are using text and 256 color graphics I don't think you would notice.

Michelle -
You are about a year early for a large high quality flat panel. Current LCD technology has a larger dot pitch than even equivalent sized CRT, which means that the individual color 'dots' stand out more - your eye blends them in to give true color. Larger dots result in a 'grainy' appearance even when resolution in pixels per inch is the same. Currently, 1024x768 is a 'big' LCD and 1280x1024 gets you into nosebleed territory.

The next generation products use a different mechanism for generating color. There are several competing methods, but all (except LCD) generate a single pixel dot with the full range of color. These devices have a much better appearance than CRT and are WAY ahead of LCD. Currently, they are expensive laboratory experiments but volume will drive costs down to CRT-like prices. They also can manage high resolution - I looked at a 21" panel with 1600 x 1200 resolution and it was beautiful. My advice - wait a year and get the good stuff.
