David: This story out today, too:

TOKYO, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Semiconductor sales at seven of the world's top 11 chip makers showed double-digit declines in 1998, market research firm Dataquest said on Wednesday.

Top placed Intel Corp <INTC.O> saw its 1998 chip sales rise by 4.3 percent year-on-year to $22.68 billion, Dataquest said.

But chip sales at NEC Corp <6701.T>, which was ranked second, declined 19.1 percent from the previous year to $8.27 billion in 1998, it said.

Hitachi Ltd <6501.T> sold $4.65 billion worth of semiconductor products in 1998, down a sharp 26.2 percent from 1997. The company was ranked seventh in the global chip market in 1998.

"The DRAM (dynamic random access memory) market is sailing in uncharted waters, having suffered its third bad year in a row. Over-capacity reared its head in previously profitable product segments and the ramifications of the Asian financial crisis continued to be felt throughout the year," said Joe D'Elia, associate director at Dataquest."
