Was at the NYC Apple Center Expo-simulcast.

My reaction was kind of "blown away" by all that material that they were trying to squeeze into the presentation. If anything it was overkill, with so many good things clamoring to be the lead story. [Which, nonetheless, is better than being underwhelmed.]

Some points that caught me:

*OSX Server showing *50* different videos on separate disk-less iMacs was huge!

*For the desktops and displays, AAPL has moved to a predominantly white w/blue trim look. IMO, it's a bit more conservative (neutral, corporate-friendly) than a 75% Bondi-blue would've been.

The Apple Center brought out a Yosemite and 17" CRT. Personal reaction to the styling, is that I love the new towers but am not so crazy about the over-sized iMac-style monitors. Nonethess, the Trinitron was extremely sharp -- even down to 1600 x 1200 and I told my boss that we should be highly recommending them for $499.

*The new Studio Displays are only $50 less than the old ones. Good for AAPL, which shows demand is still high. Bad for me, cause I thought I could get an old one cheap.

*John Carmack's (Doom/Quake designer) demo of Quake-arama. Devastatingly beautiful 3D graphics. Priceless macho-nerd demeanor/repartee. Praised everything about the new hardware except the lack of a three-button mouse.

*Sherlock *already* tied for fourth with Netscape site as the most utilized search engine (remember only 2 million copies of 8.5 out there). Also, Explorer 4.5 now features Sherlock in its menu bar. (Nyaah, nyaah ... )

*As someone who works in a Mac service center and has to carry around CPUs all day, I *love*Yosemite's four butch handles. [Uh, one question though, where does one plug in the Global Village modem?] I think we'll sell a lot of these.

*Apple may have a marketing hit with its multi-color iMacs [Collect all five!], but they're going to be hell on inventory management. Reminds me a story of an old college friend who got a great price on a new lime-green Mercedes that no-one else wanted.

I told our stockroom boss about this. It's sad to see a grown man cry.

*Virtual PlayStation. Are you kidding me? Told my boss to order as many copies as he wanted. I'm saving the rest of my Blockbuster gift certificates for game rentals!

*The HAL 9000/Y2K opening spot was scary. Very scary. As in "scare-the-peanuts-out-of-your-M&Ms" scary. Did we just see the SuperBowl spot? Will we have to look up while passing office buildings for fear of Dells being tossed out of CEO's windows?

Regarding the current stock price: screw the short-term. Apple continues to lay the foundation for a world-class company whose long-term impact severely belies their currently anemic market cap.

I lost a $5 dollar bet with my nephew that AAPL would outperform DELL last year. I offered to go "double-or-nothing" for '99, but he passed. [Smart kid.]

AAPL's performance in 1998 was nothing compared to what the future holds.
