Worldwide Revs Dip For 7 Of Top 11 Semiconductor Vendors - Report
(NewsTraders.com)-- Everyone new it was a weak year for the semiconductor industry, but market research firm Dataquest surprised many observers when it said that seven of the top 11 vendors saw worldwide revenues fall by no less than 14% in 1998, according to Newsbytes.
Highlights:

- On the positive side, Intel (INTC) and three European companies -- Siemens, STMicroelectronics and Philips -- saw revenues rise.

- Dataquest's Joe D'Elia, who heads the firm's Semiconductor Europe program, characterized 1998 as "a year slated to be the worst since the mid-eighties." He said a chip glut and the Asian financial crisis were the primary culprits for the weak sales.

- Kevin McClure, an analyst at Dataquest, said that companies with DRAM "in their portfolios" were the worst performers.
