Canadian high-techs surge on bargain-hunting

TORONTO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Canadian high-technology issues rallied on Tuesday as investors tore their gaze away from the hot Nasdaq market to look northward for bargains, analysts said.

''Any high-techs, people are buying,'' said Todd Kapala, investment specialist at Priority Brokerage. Toronto-listed firms have lagged the big gains in the technology-laden Nasdaq market over the last few months, he noted. ''The Canadian ones haven't done really as well.''

Analyst Howard Lis at Griffiths McBurney added that Canadian issues were due for an upward move. ''Just a bit of early year euphoria,'' Lis said.

Gains were posted by electronics manufacturing service provider Celestica Inc. (Toronto:CLS.TO - news) (NYSE:CLS - news), which rose C$2.10 to C$41.50, and cyberspace auctioneer Bid.Com International Inc. (Toronto:BII.TO - news), which added C$0.45 to C$4.25. Both are based in Toronto.

Here is something relavent to BII! "Company agreed to purchase advertising and promotion for US $1,250,000 per quarter for two years " lets see that is $5 mill. US per yr. for placement on the AOL Page alone . Assuming a 10 % 0f gross ( high % ) advertising budget . I would presume a gross sales figure return of $50,000,000.00 US to flow to the BII site. BII is projecting $20 Mill./ $25 Mill. Can. gross this year . The advertising budget for AOL alone works out to a whooping 30% of projected gross, it's no wonder BII got exclusive rights . Interesting to also note AOL paid nothing for BII shares( contra )and that AOL declined to acquire BII . Waldos current figure of 36 mill.shares outstanding equals a recent dilution of approx. 45% of share holder value at todays close . Just some observations .

PS : I see we share a common interest in another Web stock.
