<<Manufacturing index dips... On the economic front, the purchasing managers' index for manufacturing in the last year in the U.S. is now down 8 percent from December 1997. In Germany, meanwhile, it's down 11 percent, in the UK, down 9 percent, and in Sweden, down 13.7 percent. In Brazil, auto sales fell 5 percent in December compared to the year before.
