I can answer your beta question...you can compare a stocks beta (volitilty) to the Dow..The dow trades at a 1...anything higher means the stock is more volitile(sp?) than the market in general...a number less than 1 and the stock is less volitile than the market in general.
Hope this helps....IMO for short term trades more volitile stocks which tend to move up and down more are more desirable.
