I can understand where you are coming from...a lot of people started on America Online(I did too!), but as you get more "online saavy", you find you don't need the nice little things it has to offer....I found myself always going right to the web crawler. So now I just use a local internet provider, but I will remember how AOL got me hooked to the online world.
There are many people just getting into the internet, and AOL is a great start...and it pays off for AOL...as well as companies like Apple and their popular IMac. You have to get started somewhere, right?
And as these newbies get more familiar, AOL will just keep growing and expanding to keep one step ahead...at least that's what I think and am counting on!! :-)
I am seeing older people that were actually SCARED of PCs ("oh, that is too complicated!") actually get online and loving it...they are getting over the "computers are for word processing/business/games" and discovering what cyberspace really is.....something for everyone.
Recipes. Stock Quotes. Sports Scores. Special Interest Groups.
....so addictive....so addictive!!!!

Annette

A lot of people will be comfortable with AOL and NOT want to change. What's wrong with that if it suits their needs? :-)

So will AOL continue go up even there is free online service? I doubt it.

DJ

If you believe your own BS, you need to short AOL first thing in the morning. You should get rich. right?

dj8000 there are a lot of folks not so tech savvy that love AOL to start. A lot of the other sites are less homey than AOL.
AT&T tried long ago to sell phones to people.Opened kiosks.Nothing. failed miserably. They closed it and sold it ( I think it Phillips ). So AT&T is now going to become Bloomingdale's?
After leaving (2 years ago ) and pooh-poohing AOL, I got back into the stock because I was impressed by Case. Here is a guy that did not quit. Hand in there until he got it right: 15 Mil subscribers plus S&P. Case is simply an old fashioned salesman.Pure Americana. the guy knocking on your door that sells a vacuum cleaner and you are happy you did it.
Wait until he gets his hands on other selling gimmicks. I think he is similar to M Dell. You pick a business model and then you execute real good and surprise everybody.

Think of AOL/Case as the next Wall Mart of cyberspace and go form there,

dj, AOL the company has many critical challenges ahead. No prophets here, though we like to try seeing the future a bit.

However, if you believe AOL's prospects are so poor that you are considering shorting the stock, perhaps you should think it through again.

Some of the most current news:
a. $1.2 billion in holiday e-commerce sales
b. 1 million new subscribers between mid-November and late December despite the fact it is not a free service
c. partnerships with Netscape and Sun Microsystems, and NSCP announced its 10 millionth user yesterday.

I wish you luck,
Paul

DJ:
I question that it is really free, because you probably paid for software or some initial hookup charge and got promised free service forever.
Remember, that the service can only be provided as long as the company is in business, and if they don't make a profit, they will be OUT of business, you will lose your e-mail address, have to get a new one, have to tell everyone you communicate with your new e-mail address, ya da ya da...
Think about it!
There is NO FREE LUNCH!
