I suggest you go along with the installer's program unless you're knowledgeable about all this. That means paying about $50 where you don't really need to. You can't trust that Jan 25 install date at all. You might find yourself in May and nada. If it does get installed whenever, then you can start checking out other mfger's cable modems. You initially will be renting with an option to buy. Just rent and then investigate. During the renting period you can develop a feel for things before you make another move. The modem hardware scene is rapidly changing. Modems that will be coming are significantly better than what's out there now.

Maybe you can give us some feedback from your brother about the good and bad of DSL.

Most cable companies will allow you to lease the modem, rather than purchase it out-right. In S. Cal it costs $15 per month on top of the monthly bill to lease the modem (Motorola). Buying it was going to be $399. Thought it may help and welcome to the 21st century and ATHM.

Wouldn't buy anything until DOCSIS compliant modems are available. Here we pay $10 lease as part of $40/month charge. Curious as to what your charges will be as well as you brother's charges (installation and monthly) for his DSL service. Thanks.
