If you define myth broadly as philosophy than I have my own sort of myth based on what sense I have made for myself out of the universe as I understand it.

After all with modern physics it becomes possible to believe in very interesting things- it seems to me modern physics approaches philosophy, and thus myth. So perhaps that is a confluence between science and myth.

miss penni, I nominate you as chairperson of the committee to fabricate the new millennium myth based on our present scientific understanding of our World and Universe and how personkind fits into the scheme of things. The committee will be made up of feelies women. I suggest Christine, Elsa, and X(I haven't gotten your name yet). Men have had their shot in the past and botched it.

<< Del also said something about how he would rather the new mythologies be based on scientific fact (I might be misquoting)--and it started me wondering if that were possible. Or are myths by definition attempts to explain the unknown? >>

Why shouldn't it be possible? Isn't it the goal of science to explain the unknown? How do you get a new myth started anyway, call a press conference?

Science is a rich source of material with many important new findings in recent years such as the confirmation of black holes where matter and time cease to exist in that location. Consider that if one were to enter a black hole of sufficient effective diameter that person could leave this Universe without being destroyed. Where do you end up? How's that for starters?
