Given that lots of existing food distributors etc. are getting into the net act here and only one is using PPOD software what is the situation like in the US apart from Netgrocer that I hear a lot about?

The delivering from stores model doesn't make much sense for PPOD. Either they need to be a supermarket themeselves (which they are beginning to try) and the advertising revenue from their site. So I guess they are going the right way but not really fast enough yet.

On the other hand I am beginning to think the only advantage that Amazon will have over people buying direct from publishers online using a specific search-engine to find the best deal e.g.

acses.com

is going to be if people want more than one book from different publishers then they will save on packing and postage costs. And of course second-hand and out of print books is a niche.

There are a couple of letters on this in the latest edition of Business Week (Asian one at least).
