( BW)(WAVE-SYSTEMS)(WAVX) Wave Systems' EMBASSY and NEC's PID Software
To be integrated into Pollex Fingerprint ID System

Business/Technology Editors

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 1999--

Companies to offer industry an affordable PC-Based
Solution for fingerprint identification

Delivering on its strategy to develop applications for
trusted-client technology, Wave Systems Corp. (OTC BB:WAVX)
(http://www.wave.com), a company that facilitates secure transactions on the desktop, today announced a technology license agreement with NEC Technologies Inc. nectech.com, and Pollex Technology Ltd. pollex.ch, both leaders in finger imaging technology.
The agreement provides that Wave will incorporate NEC's PID(TM)
(Positive Identification) software into its EMBASSY(TM) (EMBedded
Application Security System), and bundle the resultant EMBASSY
firmware into Pollex's Pollog PC- compatible fingerprint sensor.
Fingerprint signatures will be stored inside the EMBASSY, providing a
previously unavailable level of security. In addition, by
incorporating the EMBASSY technology in end user devices, electronics
manufacturers can also offer their customers additional security
functions such as robust digital content metering and secure
transaction and application processing.
"Given the increased security issues posed by the widespread
global deployment of PCs, there is substantial value for the corporate
CIO in having a network of PCs that can recognize and store
fingerprint IDs at an affordable price," said Steven Sprague, Wave
Systems president. "Today's license agreement reflects our strategy to
continue partnering with top-tier developers to create a growing base
of industry leading applications that benefit from the capabilities
and distribution of trusted-client technology."
The companies are currently co-marketing this technology to a
number of PC OEM partners who will integrate this new technology into
their products. The agreement will also allow participating companies
to benefit from shared revenue resulting from the sale of digital
content. End-users will be able to purchase from a broad collection of
content through Wave Systems' CD- Bundling program.
NEC's PID finger imaging software captures, stores and matches
finger image data. Based on NEC's proven matching algorithm, the PID
system offers one-to-one (1:1) matching or the more powerful
one-to-many (1:N) matching. PID applications have been developed for
the healthcare, network security and social services markets among
others. Through the Pollex and Wave agreement, NEC will take its first
step into trusted electronic commerce.
"Increasing the security of e-commerce transactions with NEC's
finger imaging technology will simultaneously speed the market's
already growing acceptance of electronic commerce and biometrics,"
stated Jim Menendez, executive director of NEC's Advanced
Identification Solutions Group.
"Only truly thought out solutions will be good enough to meet the
essential security demands of tomorrow," said Jean- Denis Borer C.E.O.
of Pollex. "The combination of key partners like Wave and NEC as well
as market interest from North American vendors has created the ideal
situation for us to offer our technology. With Pollex Technology on
board.your identity has been verified."
Pollex Technology, Ltd. is dedicated to research and development
in the field of biometric identification based on fingerprint
recognition. Pollex supports an international team of experts in the
field of biometrics which include scientists, engineers, and
programmers who develop chip-based system solutions that are
exceptional in terms of reliability, safety and quality. The range of
applications for Pollex products include, but are not limited to:
E-Commerce, Network and Local work stations, Time and Attendance, user
ID for credit and chip based cards (smart cards) and cellular phones.
The EMBASSY E-Commerce System is an open, programmable,
standards-based platform for running secure applications and
protecting important data and digital identities on individual PCs and
other end user devices. The EMBASSY E- Commerce System is the first
implementation of the trusted- client technology recently announced by
Wave, and will allow third-party software vendors to develop secure
PC-based, e-commerce applications that run in a trusted environment.
Core benefits of the EMBASSY System:

-- OEMs and the "client-side" computing equipment manufacturers will
gain product differentiation as well as benefit from shared
revenue from the sale of digital content through their hardware.

-- The software community can benefit from a new distribution
platform, flexible pricing models and security inherent in
trusted-client technology.

-- Consumers utilizing the EMBASSY technology will be able to
quickly and conveniently purchase, pay-per-use or rent-to- own
top entertainment, education and software titles directly from
end-user devices.

Moreover, EMBASSY is compatible with content distribution
channels, including the Internet, cable television, Data- Broadcast,
CD-ROM, or DVD, while also providing the needed end-user content and
subscriber management system. Consumers receive the flexibility of
paying for information based upon their actual usage.

About NEC Technologies:

NEC Technologies developed one of the first biometric
applications nearly 30 years ago. Today, NEC's biometric
identification technology is being used in over 300 installations in
14 countries. Since its initial installation, NEC has successfully
tailored its finger imaging technology to meet the identification
requirements of such markets as healthcare, licensing, welfare and
security. Headquartered in Itasca, Ill., NEC Technologies Inc., an
affiliate of NEC Corporation, is a leading manufacturer of computer
peripherals and other technology products for the North American
market. Information on NEC AFIS and its products can be obtained by
