OAKT News its been moving starting to settle a little but i think it will run. Oak Technology to Provide MPEG Decoding for Hitachi/Cisco Networks Program Concept Demonstration Set-Top Boxes Business Wire - January 06, 1999 09:47 CES9 SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 1999-- Reference Design Using OTI-8211 MPEG-2 Decoder to Speed Development of Advanced Network Services for Digital Television Set-Top Boxes Oak Technology (Nasdaq:OAKT), a provider of semiconductor solutions that enable the delivery of digital content to the home, today announced that its OTI-8211 MPEG-2 decoder has been selected by the Hitachi Semiconductor/Cisco Systems Networks Program for use in a concept demonstration set-top box (STB) reference design. The OTI-8211, a recent addition to the portfolio of products from Oak's Consumer Group, will provide audio and video decoding for the Networks Program's STB platform. The STB platform is designed to demonstrate Hitachi and Cisco technologies applicable to advanced set top boxes, such as Voice over IP and combining video with broadband data services. "The integration of our OTI-8211 MPEG-2 A/V decoder in the Hitachi/Cisco STB reference platform is a clear example of our continuing progress towards driving a new generation of digital consumer products," said Paul Vroomen, president of Oak Technology's Consumer Group. "We are developing a product portfolio for cable, satellite and terrestrial digital broadcasting based on a common MPEG decoding architecture and software structure, which will enable our OEM customers to rapidly bring their product designs to market. Through this common architecture, virtually any product in the digital audio/video consumer space can take advantage of a solution from Oak's Consumer Group." The Consumer Group at Oak Technology develops integrated circuits and system-level solutions for consumer electronics OEMs in the digital media and broadcast markets. Applications for these solutions range from DVD players to cable, satellite and terrestrial set-top boxes and digital video servers. Oak's consumer products share an evolving system-level and chip-level architecture. This common architecture philosophy allows OEMs in these global markets to quickly and cost-effectively develop products that support the convergence in the digital television (DTV), DVD and STB markets. The Hitachi Semiconductor/Cisco Systems Networks Program reference designs will enable rapid development of new network technology for digital STBs, such as IP phone capability and web browsing functions. The designs will be powered by Hitachi SuperH RISC processors, Cisco network technologies, IGS video and graphics processors, and Oak's MPEG-2 audio/video decoder. The OTI-8211 is the market's first device to provide MPEG-2 A/V decoding with a transport stream demultiplexer unit and designed for applications within the consumer digital broadcast markets, such as digital television systems and set-top boxes for cable, satellite and terrestrial systems. The device supports both NTSC (720 x 480) and PAL (720 x 576) video resolutions and features dedicated MPEG-2 audio and video processing units. With a 60 MHz MicroSPARC RISC core with data cache, the OTI-8211 works with common external host microprocessors such as the Intel 80xx and Motorola 680xx series through an 8-/16-bit parallel host interface. The on-screen display (OSD) offers a 16-color mode and five levels of transparency. Inputs to the OTI-8211 are serial and parallel interfaces for MPEG transport streams. A CCIR601 digital video output interfaces to an external video encoder. The foregoing statements may consist of forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties.
