Hey, K, at least you told me something exists! Maybe someone here will know exactly what it is. If so, I'm going to get one for my father as an "early [REAL early]" birthday present. He just got a PC, his first, and if he gets into web surfing, he'll drive my mother nuts if it means tying up the line.

You may be thinking of ADSL modems. They are not available everywhere as you must be within a certain distance of the central office. The easy way right now is to get two phone lines. Cost is about $30 a month ($360) annual.
TP (It also helps when I'm not on the internet and my daughter wants to talk to her friends).
