Interesting article in 11 Jan issue of Business Week (p12 in Asia) on big cap vs small and the role of institutional investors. Before 1980 small caps did very well but since then large caps have done better. From 1980-96 institutional holdings rose from 28% to 51% of market capitalization. They argue that preference for large caps by institutions has driven the change in returns for the two sectors.
