Jon - Interest rates going from (roughly) 1% to 2% should not "make or break" a situation

By the same token neither should they make or break the financial system. Yes? And in any case one of the big benefits of raising the interest rates is to attract more savings and that is definitively something that the Japanese do not need more of - in fact the government is trying to get them to actually spend. I suspect that our difference in philosophy comes from our respectively different foci on life (I am an engineer and tend to emphasize the importance of manufacturing and consumption).
