You're right, Mike, the shorts are going to be sorry about this one (I think, I hope). The word, BTW, is bated:

bate1 (b³t) tr.v. bat·ed, bat·ing, bates. 1. To lessen the force or intensity of; moderate: “To his dying day he bated his breath a little when he told the story” (George Eliot).

ps I couldn't help but sell some four and half dollar shares for 6.125 - 6.25 today, but I bought half of 'em back at 5.625.
