Pfizer's Viagra Faster, Safer When Inhaled, AFP Reports

Pfizer's Viagra Faster, Safer When Inhaled, AFP Reports

Washington, Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc.'s top-selling
anti-impotence drug Viagra leads to almost instant erections
when it's inhaled, Agence France Presse reported, citing two
U.S. researchers who developed a new delivery system for the
treatment. Viagra, which can only be purchased in the form of a
pill, sometimes takes as much as an hour to work, a delay that
can lead men to take more tablets and put their health at risk,
according to AFP. Inhalation works faster because the drug's
active ingredient passes directly into the blood stream, whereas
a pill must first enter the small intestine, where it's slow to
dissolve, AFP said.

Viagra became a household name in the U.S. after it had the
most successful drug launch ever, with sales of $411 million in
the three months following its April introduction. It was
approved for sale in the European Union in September and in
Japan last month.
