MPEG-7 (yes, 7) on the drawing board

Rome - Industry is answering the call for proposals for MPEG-7. After its meeting here last month, the MPEG Committee revealed that it has received 657 preregistration responses from companies and academic institutions throughout the world. Preregistration is mandatory for those who wish to respond to the call for proposals.

MPEG-7 will define procedures for automatic search and identification of multimedia content. It's regarded as a formidable task but a much-needed one. Many text-based search engines are available on the World Wide Web, and some multimedia databases can search for pictures based on such characteristics as color, texture and the shape of objects. But no tools yet exist to do searches in streaming audio or video.

Proposals are due by Feb. 1 and will evaluated in a special meeting Feb. 15-19 in Lancaster, England.
