Brazil's Minas Gerais state suspends debt payments

BRASILIA, Jan 6 (Reuters) - The Brazilian state of Minas Gerais announced Wednesday a 90-day moratorium on payments of its debt to the central government in defiance of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso and his anti-crisis austerity drive.

Minas Gerais governor Itamar Franco, himself a former Brazilian president, said he ordered the payments to be halted ''for absolute lack of money'' in the central Brazilian state, the country's third largest in economic terms.
