Perhaps, except that weaker dollar/stronger yen would positevely impact Asian Recovery...(Why dollar is getting killed against Yen if not for that reason?)It is not Car Market like Toyotas..big chunk is consumed in Asia

Comments boost Applied Materials
BT Alex. Brown upgrades semiconductor makers

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Applied Materials advanced after
analysts at BT Alex. Brown upgraded the chip-equipment maker, among
other companies in the sector, to "strong buy" from "market perform,"
forecasting strong 1999 earnings.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 13 points, up 3 percent as
BT Alex. Brown raised their investment ratings on several semiconductor
chip manufacturers.

In a research note, analysts upped their fiscal 2000
earnings estimates on Applied Materials (AMAT)
to $2.00 from $1.74 and established a 12-month
price target of $60. The current First Call
consensus estimate is $1.62 a share. Analysts said
fourth-quarter PC and related semiconductor
device sales looked strong into the second quarter
of 1999.

Shares of Applied jumped 7.7 percent, up 3 13/16,
to 53 9/16.

Analysts also noted that an increase in Taiwanese
spending, which recently showed improvement
after a slowdown, will benefit Applied's orders.
Taiwanese spending will improve in the first quarter
due to anticipated orders by graphics-chip
companies, analysts said.

Other semiconductor capital-equipment manufacturers advanced,
benefiting from the upgrades. Novellus Systems (NVLS) was upgraded to
"strong buy" from "market perform," with a 12-month price target of $90.
KLA-Tencor (KLAC) stock was raised to "strong buy" from "market
perform" as well, with a 12-month price target of $69. Both Lam
Research (LRCX) and ATMI, Inc. (ATMI) were upped to "buy" from
"market perform."

Novellus shares gained 7 1/2 at 66 1/16 and Lam Research advanced 1
7/8 at 27 1/8. KLA-Tencor rose 1 7/16 to 54 1/16 and ATMI gained 1
to 28 3/8.
