Hannah Arendt covered that in The Origins of Totalitarianism. She actually found that 20th Century Communism was indeed worse because unlike fascism, it took over virtually all facets of society and daily existence. And if you measure from the sheer toll of human lives exacted, communism certainly exceeds its evil twin.

Communism perfected one thing and that was totalitarianism. It became "idealism" gone mad. Of course they had more time to work, and they had so many Western leftists insisting all the way to the bitter end (and obviously beyond the pale) on a moral equivalency between the totalitarians of the Left and those who would resist them.

You have to give him credit, Michael Kelly is trying to stake out some moral high ground for intelligent liberals. And he certainly scored a bullseye with that article.
