SDTI and IBM Announce Market Trial Program for VPN Remote Access Services with Integrated Strong Authentication
January 7, 1999 07:01 AM BEDFORD, Mass., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Security Dynamics Technologies, Inc. SDTI and IBM IBM today announced a market trial program designed to simplify implementation of higher levels of security for customers of IBM's global network. The program will spotlight Security Dynamics' SecurID(R) two-factor authentication technology as an integrated feature of IBM's remote access services for its virtual private network (VPN) offerings, and also incorporates Security Dynamics' two factor ACE/Server(R) network security and token distribution.
IBM's global network business, which is in the process of being acquired by AT&T, provides managed network services from 1,350 remote access points of presence in 53 countries and serves more than 45,000 customer enterprises worldwide.
"Ensuring authorized access to corporate systems is a concern for all businesses," said Bruce Jackson, vice president for network services, IBM Global Services. "However, implementation of strong authentication for remote access has been a complex challenge for many organizations. We are pleased to be able to simplify the solution with this managed service program that integrates strong two-factor authentication, using SecurID software tokens, with our remote access VPN capabilities."
The solution provides a one-stop shop where customers can achieve strong security transparently as part of IBM's VPN offerings. This effectively relieves companies of the cost and burden of implementing and managing the intricacies of security themselves while ensuring the integrity of their VPN. The global reach of IBM's remote access VPN capabilities combined with the strong security afforded by SDTI's technology will help enable companies to effectively expand the reach of their enterprise networks to small, remote offices and individuals virtually anywhere in the world.
"For IBM Global Services customers participating in this program, SecurID will be instantly available at the desktop, providing strong authentication with little change to their current logon procedures," said Scott Schnell, senior vice president of marketing at Security Dynamics and RSA Data Security, Inc. "We are pleased to expand our relationship with IBM, and believe that this joint effort will reinforce the value and reliability of SecurID for electronic commerce."
ACE/Server provides centralized, strong authentication services for enterprise networks, designed to ensure that only authorized users gain access to network files, applications and communications. In conjunction with Security Dynamics' patented SecurID token technology, ACE/Server creates a virtually impenetrable barrier against unauthorized access, protecting network and data resources from potentially devastating accidental or malicious intrusion.
SecurID authenticators come in different form factors, including credit card-sized hardware tokens and key fobs, as well as software tokens. The strength of the SecurID solution is rooted in its patented algorithm that generates a one-time, pseudo-random code that changes every 60 seconds. The same algorithm is incorporated in the ACE/Server network security software. When an authorized user enters the current one-time code as indicated by SecurID, along with a unique personal identification number (PIN), the ACE/Server validates the passcode and permits the ACE/Agent that front ends the network resource to allow user access. The SecurID solution is designed such that by combining these two factors -- the one-time code with a PIN -- only authorized employees, business partners and customers can gain access to confidential information.
