Dow Jones Newswires -- January 7, 1999 Cisco Sys, Genl Instrument, AT&T In Internet Access Pact SAN JOSE (Dow Jones)--Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) and General Instrument Corp. (GIC) plan to develop an Internet protocol technology that would allow AT&T Corp. (T) to provide data, voice and video services over the hybrid fiber-coax network being deployed by AT&T and Tele-Communications Inc. (TCOMA). In a press release Thursday, Cisco said the technology would allow AT&T customers to simultaneously watch television, send and receive faxes, use the Web and talk on the telephone. The companies plan to conduct a market trial of the new telephony technology beginning in late 1999, moving toward commercial availability next year. Cisco confirmed that the supply agreement, which is nonexclusive, is part of its plan to expand its presence in the consumer Internet access market. As reported in The Wall Street Journal Thursday, the company is mounting a campaign to draw attention to its consumer business, including Internet products that can be used at home. Cisco valued the AT&T agreement at less than $100 million, the Journal reported. Under its plan to expand into the consumer business, Cisco will help service providers build high-speed connections to the home and other consumer locations, will license technology and will partner with companies to pursue its plan. Also, Cisco said more than 30 service providers and consumer electronic companies have agreed to suport its plan to expand into the consumer market. Cisco also plans to introduce a new type of "personalized" network for the home, a plug-and-play local area network connecting PCs, phones, televisions and other Internet devices. The company formed a Consumer Line of Business to be headed by vice president and general manager Robba Benjamin. interactive.wsj.com
