Because your browser's implementation of Java has bugs in it.

It's probably "Windows" that is crashing your browser.

I am doubting your premise. Java's foot print is to costly to ever be put into a toaster. In fact, I am still waiting for the day that an 8051 goes into a toaster. I could be wrong, maybe one day the shell of a toaster would be a monitor and you can play games over it. Maybe Sony will be the first to make it, and call it a Waffle Station. Or maybe, toasters would fly one day, but Java probably would be too slow to control my $15 flying toaster.
